Beyond the binary: Limitations and possibilities of gender-related speech technology research

Sanchez, Ariadna, Ross, Alice, Markl, Nina

arXiv.org Artificial Intelligence

This paper presents a review of 107 research papers relating to speech and sex or gender in ISCA Interspeech publications between 2013 and 2023. We note the scarcity of work on this topic and find that terminology, particularly the word gender, is used in ways that are underspecified and often out of step with the prevailing view in social sciences that gender is socially constructed and is a spectrum as opposed to a binary category. We draw attention to the potential problems that this can cause for already marginalised groups, and suggest some questions for researchers to ask themselves when undertaking work on speech and gender.

How reading, knitting and playing chess can prevent Alzheimer's

Daily Mail - Science & tech

There are nearly seven million people currently diagnosed with Alzheimer's in the US, and while there is no cure, experts are searching for ways to prevent it. That is because stories about far off lands and mythical creatures require readers to remember what happened early on in the book to understand the ending. 'Fiction may elicit more intense emotions and imagery in addition to new facts and ideas from reading non-fiction books,' said Dr. Zaldy Tan, a professor of neurology and medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. 'But more than the type of book, the key here is sustainability, Tan said, adding: 'I recommend people challenge their minds by reading something new to them.' Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the US with 6.9 million people living with the disease which is expected to double by 2050 Neuroscientists have suggested that remaining physically active and engaging in other activities like knitting, playing chess and puzzles and gardening could also prevent cognitive decline. 'Leisure activities including reading have been associated with lower risk of developing dementia in older adults,' Tan told DailyMail.com.

Who is the Iran-backed coalition Islamic Resistance in Iraq, responsible for deadly drone strike on US troops?

FOX News

Three American troops were killed and dozens more were injured in northeast Jordan Sunday in an attack that marked a major escalation of tensions in the region. The Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a loose coalition of Iran-backed militant groups, is claiming responsibility for the deadly attack. Per an analysis from the Pro-Israeli Washington Institute for Near East Policy, the "Islamic Resistance in Iraq," is not a singular unit per se but rather, an umbrella term used to tie the operations of various Iran-backed proxies in Iraq and Syria. The report determined that an umbrella term obscures responsibility, making it more difficult to determine who is exactly responsible for attacks on U.S. targets. Global Big Data Conference

The advances in AI have benefited virtually every commercial industry - but there is as much (or more!) hype about AI as there is real AI. In the midst of this are the terms - AI, Data Science, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, etc. - that are adding to the confusion. In this post, I offer perspective on two of these terms - AI and Data Science, and what they (commonly) mean relative to each other. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is an umbrella term for any technology where a computer program is attempting tasks that come naturally to the human brain. Skills such as understanding written language, detecting speech, recognizing objects from images, and making plans to optimize time, are all examples of intelligence that humans display every day.

Key mental abilities including concentration get better as you age, study finds

Daily Mail - Science & tech

It's long been thought that getting on in years leads to a gradual decline in our brainpower. But a new study now suggests that key mental abilities including concentration and attention may actually get better with age. These key brain functions underpin critical cognitive aspects such as memory, self-control and decision making, and even navigation, math, language and reading. 'These results are amazing, and have important consequences for how we should view ageing,' said Michael T. Ullman, a professor at Georgetown University and co-author of the study. 'People have widely assumed that attention and executive functions decline with age, despite intriguing hints from some smaller-scale studies that raised questions about these assumptions.

Scientists develop an AI that can diagnose dementia from a brain scan

#artificialintelligence

Artificial intelligence has been employed in the fight against dementia by scientists who say it can diagnose the condition from a single scan of the brain. Currently in pre-clinical trials, the system has been able to diagnose dementia years before the first symptoms develop, even with no signs of damage on the scan. It currently takes multiple scans and tests to diagnose dementia, and by the time they are complete it may be too late to enact some of the remedies that can offset the condition, researchers from the Alan Turing Institute in Cambridge explained. The new system compares brain scans of those worried they might have dementia with scans from thousands of dementia patients to identify patterns. Being able to diagnose the condition early, even before any signs are visible on scans, will allow for lifestyle and medical interventions to delay the onset, according to the team.

Practical Use Cases of Artificial Intelligence in Marketing

#artificialintelligence

The use case for Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the workplace is there. Deloitte's Tech Trends 2021 found AI and machine learning technologies are helping financial services firm Morgan Stanley use decades of data to supplement human insight with accurate models for fraud detection and prevention, sales and marketing automation, and personalized wealth management, among others. For marketing and customer experience, in particular, organizations are using AI and machine learning to improve internal business processes and workflow, automating repetitive tasks and to improve customer journeys and touchpoints, among other use cases. The CMO Survey by Duke University reports a steady increase as far as the extent to which companies are reporting implementing AI or ML into their marketing toolkits. However, the majority of marketers know AI is very important or critical to their success this year, according to Paul Roetzer, founder and CEO of the Marketing AI Institute and PR 20/20.

Going to university does NOT protect you against dementia or heart disease, scientists confirm

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Going to college or university and getting a degree may help prepare you for the working world -- but it won't stop age-related brain shrinkage, a study found. Education has long been associated with health benefits -- including a decreased risk of heart disease, a delayed peak in cognitive abilities and lower risk of dementia. It has been contended that greater levels of education in childhood and early adulthood can slow the rate of brain aging in late adulthood. To put this to the test, an international team of researchers analysed the brain structure of some 2,000 people at different stages of their lives. They found that while higher education can lead to larger brain volumes, it does nothing significant to stave off the ravages of age.

Defining AI, ML, and Predictive Analytics for Non-Techies

#artificialintelligence

Obviously, people define AI and machine learning in many different ways. In 2019, it is still unclear what AI is capable of and what the exact definition is. Artificial Intelligence: A non-human system that shows human-like intelligence. AI is an umbrella term, which includes machine learning and other techniques. Examples include playing the computer on a video game or talking to Siri.
